Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow in an uncontrolled way. Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from breast tissue, most commonly from the inner lining of milk ducts or the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. The first noticeable symptom of breast cancer cases are discovered when a woman feels a lump which is different from rest of the breast tissue. Lumps found in lymph nodes located in the armpits can also indicate breast cancer.

Sesame seeds have a fabulous nutritional profile, granting their capabilities in fighting, preventing, and reversing illness and disease. The seeds are especially high in copper, manganese, calcium, magnesium, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. These seeds are sources of phyto-nutrients such as omega-6 fatty acids, flavonoids, phenolic anti-oxidants, vitamins and dietary fibre with potent anti-cancer as well as health promoting properties.

Sesame seeds and oil contain one of the best sources of lignans which helps to prevent the development of breast cancer. These seeds contain a potent antioxidant known as sesamin which stops and slows down the regeneration of cancer cells and also stops the production of chemicals that are linked to their survival.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer can be identified by any of the following symptoms:

  • Lump, hard knot or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
  • Change in size or shape of the breast.
  • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple.
  • Dimpling or puckering in the breast skin.
  • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast.
  • Unusual liquid discharge from the nipple, that may be clear, bloody or of another colour, usually caused by benign conditions but possibly due to cancer.
  • New pain in one spot that does not reduce.
  • Skin of the breast, nipple or areola (dark area around the nipple) becomes scaly, red or swollen or may have ridges or pitting resembling the skin of an orange.

Causes of Breast Cancer

Some risk factors can impact woman's livelihood for developing breast cancer.

  • Age: As the person gets older, the chances of getting breast cancer are more.Over 80% of all female breast cancers occur among women aged 50+ years (after the menopause).
  • Inheritance: Family history of a close relative like mother, sister and daughter who have been diagnosed with breast cancer increases the risk factor.
  • Estrogen exposure: Early start of menses or late menopause is associated with breast cancer. This is because their bodies have been exposed to estrogens for longer time. Estrogen exposure begins when periods start, and drops dramatically during the menopause.
  • Obesity: Overweight women or post-menopausal obese women may have higher risk of developing breast cancer. Estrogen levels are higher in obese menopausal women, which cause the higher risk.
  • Dense breast tissue: Women with denser breast tissue have a greater chance of developing breast cancer.
